Freddy’s Pizza-Cicero IL.

by | Jan 11, 2025 | Cicero, Italian

To begin, let’s address the elephant in the room: no pizza was eaten. Yes, we see it right there in the name, but we still opted not to order any. That’s because it’s not their pizza that really sets Freddy’s apart. It’s everything else about this hidden gem, from the quality of the food to the uniqueness of the eatery, that truly makes it an awesome experience that never disappoints.

Nestled within a quiet neighborhood in the near western suburb of Cicero, Freddy’s blends seamlessly with the brown-bricked bungalows surrounding it. If you weren’t actively searching for it, you could easily miss the red, white, and green sign that hangs over 61st Avenue. And let’s be clear: Freddy’s is not your average restaurant. It’s part Italian grocery store, part specialty deli, part gelato stand, and part Sunday dinner at your Nonna’s house.

This has been a go-to dining spot for Margaret and me for nearly forty years. In all that time, Freddy’s Pizza has never failed to deliver consistent quality, a feat that many other food establishments can only aspire to. That’s why we are thrilled to feature them as our first review on Plot & Plate.

The main building is, quite literally, a grocery store. Inside, you can find a variety of imported olive oils, jarred sauces, and dried pastas. The line for placing food orders winds its way around the edges of the store, passing by shelves and coolers stocked with homemade gnocchi, cavatelli, tortellini, and more. Though the space is tight, it is alive with the sounds of busy employees filling orders. The air is filled with tempting smells of cured meats, fragrant spices, and crusty loaves of bread, making everyone in line eager to place their order.

If you are dining in, your meal will be taken to the kitchen and heated in the ovens before being served on disposable paper plates with plastic utensils. Once properly heated, it will be loaded on bright red plastic trays for you to take as you exit the store, down a small set of stairs, and into the adjacent dining room.

The dining area exudes a cozy charm, with enough space for about fifty customers. Framed newspaper articles and reviews decorate the exposed brick walls, showcasing the unique appeal of this establishment. Italian melodies drift from hidden speakers above, adding to the room’s atmosphere. A painting of a young Sylvester Stalone, flexing in a black t-shirt, smiling with a watchful eye, hangs over the dining area.

In the summertime, there is an outdoor patio available that adds about twenty more seats. This is the ideal spot to indulge in a frozen serving of gelato on a scorching day.

It’s important to note that Freddy’s only accepts cash as payment, so be sure to bring paper currency instead of relying on credit or debit cards. Additionally, please keep in mind that no public restrooms are available on-site, so plan accordingly before your visit.

I give Freddy’s two stars for their atmosphere. While the establishment may not be luxurious, they have put enough effort into making it comfortable for their guests. Margaret raises their rating to three stars. She appreciates the sense of belonging and camaraderie in the dining room, as well as the pleasant music and smells.

Overall, we both agree on giving the ambiance a rating of three stars.

Service

t this counter-order establishment, there are no waitstaff. However, the counter staff makes an effort to create a welcoming atmosphere, as if you’re dining with family or friends. A team of knowledgeable employees bustles behind glass cases displaying their various options of pizza, pasta, salad, and sandwiches. During busy times, it may seem chaotic, with customers calling out their orders and workers jostling for position at the lone register. But don’t worry, the staff is more than capable of answering any questions or fulfilling special requests. They take pride in their product and strive to make your experience enjoyable.

The welcoming nature of the staff and their pleasantness earns them three stars from me, while Margaret adds one more for their exceptional service to bump her rating to four.

Overall, Freddy’s service is deserving of four stars.

Freddy’s Pizza truly excels in this category. Most everything on their menu is made fresh on site, and the care and dedication put into each item is right there in every bite. With each mouthful, you’ll feel like you’re sitting at the dinner table of an Italian grandmother, whether real or imagined.

To begin our meal, we ordered an arancini. The dish consisted of a breaded and deep-fried rice ball filled with a savory mixture of meat, cheese, and peas. The crispy exterior had a beautiful golden orange hue, fitting for its name, as arancini means “orange” in Italian. The outer layer had a satisfying crispness from the frying process, while the inside was a perfect blend of soft rice and warm filling. Pro tip: request a side of their marinara sauce for dipping, or do what Margaret and I prefer, which is to dip each bite into the sauces from your other entrees for added flavor.

For our pasta dish, we opted for the cheese ravioli with crushed cherry tomato sauce. The homemade ricotta-filled pasta pieces swim in the flavorful sauce, seasoned with slices of garlic and basil. The creamy richness of the cheese is perfectly complemented by the tang of the red sauce. Every mouthful is a harmonious blend of flavors that dance in your mouth.

Freddy’s offers a variety of chicken options, from the classic Chicken Parmesan to the zesty Chicken Limone and the savory Chicken Marsala. Each full dish starts with a huge chicken breast, the size of a dinner plate. This time, we chose the Chicken Sorrentina. The tender chicken breast is breaded and topped with slices of tomato and eggplant, all covered in melted mozzarella cheese. The chicken was cooked perfectly, remaining juicy and flavorful as I sopped up every last bit of sauce with the complimentary bread.

Margaret’s opinion on the food quality at Freddy’s is as follows. “If you want a great Italian meal that tastes like it came out of somebody’s grandma’s kitchen, this place is a must. On a scale of one to five, I’d give it a ten if I could.”

I have to agree. I am unable to remember a time I’ve eaten here and been disappointed with the food. Freddy’s consistently hits it out of the ballpark.

The food quality is top-notch, earning a rating of five stars from both of us.

VALUE

Our total bill, including my Diet Coke and Margaret’s imported still water, came to $34.75, which breaks down to $17.38 per person. Considering the unique dining atmosphere and high-quality food compared to other options vying for our business, Freddy’s is unbeatable in terms of overall value. I’ve paid much more for meals that were a disappointment and left me unsatisfied, but here at Freddy’s, I can say with confidence that every dollar was well spent.

We both agree that Freddy’s is a five-star establishment in terms of value.

Hidden Gem

I would assume that without any prior knowledge of Freddy’s Pizza, the majority of people wouldn’t come across it. Located just a few minutes west of Chicago in the suburb of Cicero, it’s not exactly in a prime location. However, if you want to impress your out-of-town family or friends, this is the place to bring them. I’m willing to bet that they’ll ask the question, “How did you even find this place?”

Kid-friendly

Although the dining area may be a bit cramped and not ideal for strollers, the selection of food is sure to please your little ones. With options like pizza, pasta, and gelato, even the pickiest of eaters will find something to enjoy. And parents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that disposable plates and cutlery are used, making clean up much easier when dining with children.

overall review

Freddy’s Pizza is not to be slept on. They will strive to have you enjoy a delicious meal at an affordable price. Their friendly staff will treat you like family, and the other customers will invite you in like you’re a part of their community. It’s almost as if dining here is like becoming a member of a secret society, where everyone shares in the privilege of indulging in this inconspicuous treasure together.

To be fair, there are a handful of aspects that could potentially dampen one’s experience, and it would be remiss not to mention them.

They do not offer fountain drinks or alcoholic beverages. Instead, drinks are served in cans or bottles from a cooler.

Additionally, there is no designated parking lot for the establishment. Finding street parking during busy hours may be a slight inconvenience.

Public bathrooms are not available, so it’s important to plan accordingly.

Lastly, this is a cash-only establishment. It is important to come prepared with cash on hand.

Despite these minor inconveniences, the food and value more than compensate and should not discourage anyone from having a fantastic dining experience.

Overall, our love for Freddy’s Pizza has not wavered in nearly four decades, as they consistently deliver exceptional quality and service. It’s always entertaining to observe the reactions of first timers to the entire experience – from the store itself, to the dining room, the meal, and finally, the gelato. Everyone who visits Freddy’s is sure to be impressed by at least one aspect of their offerings.

We are excited to award Freddy’s Pizza a final rating of RETURN ENGAGEMENT. We will be returning again and again to indulge in the delicious offerings of this classic Chicago Italian restaurant, and we highly recommend that you do too.

Share with us your own experiences at Freddy’s, whether you’re a regular or a first timer. What dish do you enjoy the most?
